Kendall & Sylvens Wedding
The Broom, the Circle, the Sorority Song
Paige and I had the honor of shooting Kendall and Sylvens’ wedding at Talamore Country Club, and I wanted to write it down while it’s still fresh.
The day started quiet. Kendall was in her suite getting ready with her wedding party. Sylvens was in his suite putting on his shoes. Two rooms, two families, both getting ready for the same big moment. That’s one of my favorite parts of a wedding day, everyone calm before the joyous occasion.
The Ceremony
Rev. Dr. Lisa Graham led the ceremony. There was a scripture reading, vows, and rings. Then came a moment I won’t forget. Pastor Faubert Jean-Baptiste led a circle prayer where the parents surrounded Kendall and Sylvens, arms reaching in. Paige and I could feel the love in that circle from behind our cameras.
Then came the broom. Before Kendall and Sylvens jumped over it together, the MC explained what it means. Long ago, couples weren’t always allowed to marry the way they wanted. Jumping the broom became their way of saying, in front of everyone, we choose each other. It’s a symbol of love, unity, and getting through hard things together.
Watching Kendall and Sylvens jump that broom, hand in hand, was one of the best moments of the whole day.
Just Married
The reception kept that same energy going. A grand entrance, a first dance, and then both dads gave a blessing before dinner.
I loved watching Sylvens dance with his mom and Kendall dance with her dad, back to back, each one just as sweet as the other.
Then came the toasts. The maid of honor and best man each stood up and spoke, and you could feel how much they loved this couple in every word.
Later in the night, Kendall’s sorority sisters circled her and sang. No music, just their voices. Paige caught my eye across the room, both of us getting chills watching it through our lenses.
Then the dance floor opened back up, old school hip hop and R&B got everyone up, and the night ended.
What I loved most about this wedding was how much history and family showed up in every part of the day. The broom. The circle prayer. The sorority song. None of it was just for show. It all meant something to Kendall and Sylvens and the people who love them.
