I’ve attended many fundraisers. But when you’re photographing for Autism Delaware’s Snowflake Soiree, you’re not just capturing a party. You’re documenting hope.

I showed up at 6 PM. The room was already transforming. Blue and white everywhere. The champagne wall is glowing. Local restaurants are showcasing their finest dishes. Volunteers everywhere, making it all work.

This event raises money for autism programs across Delaware. Real programs. Real people getting real help.

Brian Hall runs Autism Delaware. When he spoke that night, he said something simple: everyone deserves to live their best life.

The silent auction had people moving around, checking out items, and making bids. The champagne wall kept everyone smiling. Local restaurants brought food that made the whole place smell amazing.

Then around 8:40, the speeches started. Brian talked about where Autism Delaware is now and where they’re going. Rodger followed. Then Mike. You could tell people were listening. Really listening.

Josh Grant ran the live auction. People were raising their paddles. Competing to give more. Wanting to help.

The wine toast was a special moment. All the staff and volunteers raised their glasses together. These were the people who made this night possible. The ones who showed up early. Stayed late. Did the work nobody sees.

Then the introduction of the band Jellyroll, and the band kept everyone dancing the rest of the night.

I kept thinking about what Brian said. Everyone deserves to live their best life. That’s what this night was about. Not just raising money. Creating possibility. Delaware shows up for its people. That’s what I saw through my camera. Simple. Real. Together.

I spent Saturday afternoon at the Delaware Aerospace Education Foundation watching 150 Girl Scouts from the Chesapeake Bay council turn into space explorers.

The event was called Mission Sisterhood: A Day of Space Exploration. Sounds fancy, right? But really it was just a bunch of girls having fun while learning about space.

Here’s what made it special. These girls showed up ready to learn. They weren’t on their phones. They weren’t bored. They were excited.

I watched them work together on projects. I saw them ask questions. Good questions too. The kind that showed they were really thinking about what they were learning.

The adults who came with them were just as into it. About 65 of them showed up to support these girls. That’s what I love to see. People showing up for kids.

What hit me most was seeing their faces light up. You know that look. When something clicks. When a kid realizes they can do something they thought was too hard or too complicated.

That’s the good stuff.

This is why I shoot events like this. Not for the portfolio, but because these moments matter. These girls might not remember every detail from Saturday. But they’ll remember how they felt. They’ll remember that someone believed they could explore space.

And maybe one of them will grow up and actually do it.

That’s worth showing up for.

Yesterday October 30th, 2025 was special.

I photographed the Fresh Start Scholarship Foundation event. It reminded me why I love this work.

Fresh Start gives money to Delaware women who want to go back to school. Women who thought they missed their chance. Women with jobs and kids and bills. Women who just need someone to believe in them.

Since 1996, they’ve given out 1.85 million dollars. That’s a lot of second chances.

The speaker was Kristine Blake. She got a Fresh Start scholarship. Now she’s a counselor helping kids. She told her story. How school changed everything for her. How doors opened that she didn’t know existed.

Big names came. Dr. Jill Biden. University of Delaware President Dr. Laura Carlson. Former First Lady of Delaware Tracey Quillen Carney. Paula Swain from Incyte. Temeka Easter Rice led the discussion.

Lisa-Marie Jackson runs Fresh Start. She said something I keep thinking about. When women get educated, families change. Kids see mom studying. They think school matters. Women get better jobs. Families do better. One scholarship touches a lot of people.

People bought raffle tickets. Made donations. Supporting women they’ll never meet. That’s pretty cool.

I photograph lots of events. This one felt different. People weren’t there to be seen. They came because they care about helping women succeed.

Delaware’s small. When we help each other, it matters. Fresh Start proves it. Almost 30 years of proof.

I reached out and asked if I could photograph her at Blackbird Forest. She said yes. When we met, I expected a quick photo session. What I didn’t expect was to walk away with one of the most powerful stories I’ve ever heard.

Sophie is Delaware’s youngest state representative and the only Asian American ever elected to the General Assembly. She told me her background reflects almost every part of the world. “I’m African American, Caribbean, Indian, Russian, Polish, English, Irish, Welsh, and Scottish,” she said. “We’re from everywhere. Seeing my ancestry results for the first time made me realize how connected we all are.”

She grew up in a mostly white neighborhood and said she was often bullied for how she looked. But summers with her cousins and grandparents were her escape. “Those were the best times,” she said. “Shrimp curry on the stove, my aunt braiding my hair, and family all around. That’s when I felt most accepted.”

Her Aunt Karen owned a salon that specialized in mixed and ethnic hair. “Every summer, I’d spend hours there,” Sophie said. “She’d braid my hair while the women talked about everything — family, work, life. It made me feel at home.”

Her family’s story stretches across continents. On her father’s side, her ancestors from India came to Trinidad as indentured servants. They experienced forced conversion and name changes, turning her Hindu Boodhooram ancestors into the Christian Phillips family. Her great-grandfather immigrated to the U.S. and opened a grocery store in New York City. Her great-grandmother was from Barbados. They met in the city and built a life together.

Her grandmother, a Russian and Polish Ashkenazi Jew, married an African American and Caribbean man with Indian heritage. At that time, it wasn’t accepted. “My great-grandfather stopped speaking to my grandmother until my dad was born,” Sophie said quietly. “I can’t imagine what that must’ve felt like.”

Her mother’s side tells a different story. Her family traces back to one of the Founding Fathers, Caleb Strong, who helped shape the U.S. Constitution. “Maybe that’s where my political side comes from,” she said with a smile. But her grandparents’ lives were far from easy. “My grandpa lived off the land in New Hampshire because they couldn’t afford food,” she said. “My grandma was homeless as a kid and lived in a tent by the river in North Carolina.”

Those stories built her. “All of that made me who I am,” she said. “It shaped how I see people and how I make decisions.”

Sophie’s life today reflects the same mix of strength and empathy. She’s a Wildlife Ecologist with Sarver Ecological and the Director of Talent Management and Operations at SheisMotivated. “My science background helps me evaluate policy,” she said. “I look at data and facts before I vote, but I always think about the people too.”

Her time as Miss Delaware in 2021 deepened her passion for environmental justice. “In my own family, I’ve seen how where you grow up changes what you have access to,” she said. “Some had parks and green spaces. Others didn’t. Everyone deserves a clean, safe environment.”

We talked about nature, and she smiled softly. “Nature brings me peace,” she said. “It reminds me of my purpose.”

When I left that day, I kept thinking about what she said. Sophie’s story isn’t just about being the youngest or the first. It’s about family, identity, and finding peace in who you are.

She reminded me that belonging isn’t about fitting in. It’s about standing in your truth — and helping others feel seen when you do.

Michelle Snow, our Master of Ceremony, set the tone with her warmth and presence. We opened with Lift Every Voice and Sing by Setoria and heard a heartfelt welcome from DEBCC President Ayanna Khan-Flowers. Rev. Dr. Ronald W. Whitaker II gave blessings before dinner.

The keynote was meant to be given by Dr. Marc Lamont Hill, but since he was sick, Jeff Johnson stepped in. His message was powerful and inspiring. It was one of those speeches that makes you stop and think about the work still ahead.

The awards ceremony was another highlight. From Member of the Year to Veteran Business of the Year, every honoree showed the strength of our business community. Each award was a reminder that progress is built by people who commit themselves daily.

The evening closed with a silent auction, good food, and dancing. More than that, it was a clear sign that the Delaware Black Chamber of Commerce has grown stronger over these five years and will continue to play a big role in the future of business here.

I left the gala proud of what I saw. This was not just a celebration of the Chamber, but a celebration of what happens when people support each other and push forward together.

Backyard, music going, people laughing from the second I walked in. I didn’t know everyone there, but it didn’t matter. The energy and excitement was there.

Jada had that kind of quiet confidence. She didn’t need to do too much. Her people were there for her, and she knew it. She smiled the way people smile when they feel safe and seen. That’s the kind of joy you can’t fake.

Kids were running around, friends catching up, while someone was always fixing a plate. I love when I don’t have to look too hard for the good stuff it’s just happening, all around.

What stuck with me most was how natural everything felt. No stress, no overplanning. Just family and friends showing up for each other. That’s the kind of party I’ll always show up for.

Today I got to be part of something big. The Delaware Black Chamber of Commerce opened its new home in downtown Wilmington on East 11th Street.

The new place is 10,000 square feet. It has a business incubator with 10 offices. Two are already taken and 25 more people are waiting to get in. This space is here to help small businesses start and grow.

Ayanna Khan, who started the Chamber, spoke about how this space will give support that many new businesses need. People can get help with things like taxes, licenses, and workshops.

The Chamber already has more than 750 members and 30 partners. This new space is another step in helping Black businesses in Delaware grow and create jobs.

I was glad to be there and see it happen. This isn’t just a building. It’s a chance for people to succeed.

The love, the laughter, the little looks they gave each other… it all had this easy flow that made the whole day feel like it was meant to be.

From the first click of the shutter to the last dance, the day was perfect.

And between me and my second shooter, Nina, we were in it.

By the end of the night? We had about 10,000 photos.

Yes. Ten thousand. And no, that’s not a typo.

A Wedding That Didn’t Wait for the Camera

The morning started like every great wedding day — a flurry of details, hair, makeup, ties, and “Where did I put my…?” moments.

Jerry was calm but focused. Ayanna? She had that glow that comes when you know the day you’ve been planning has finally arrived.

Nina and I were bouncing between rooms, covering both sides of the story. She’d call out, “Got it!” from the groomsmen’s side while I was in the bridal suite, catching the exact moment Ayanna’s daughter clasped her necklace.

At one point, I looked over and Nina just gave me that “Don’t worry, I’ve got it” look and kept going.

The Moment That Stuck with Me

The ceremony wasn’t just beautiful — it was alive.

Jerry’s eyes watered when he saw Ayanna walk down the aisle.

I’m telling you, those are the moments you can’t stage.

The Morning After

Most people might take a day to recover. I don’t.

I woke up, grabbed a big mug of coffee, and got to work — because momentum matters.

The fresher the story is in my head, the more natural the edits feel.

Step 1 – Photo Mechanic: Metadata & Tagging

My first stop was Photo Mechanic.

This is where I apply my metadata to every image — copyright info, keywords, and tagging so the entire set is organized before I even start culling or editing.

When you’re working on thousands of images, good metadata isn’t just neat — it’s essential for finding and sorting shots quickly.

Step 2 – AfterShoot: Smart Culling

Once everything was tagged, I moved to AfterShoot for AI-assisted culling.

This is where I let the software help me weed out blinks, near-duplicates, and shots that don’t quite hit the mark, while keeping the best versions of each moment.

It doesn’t replace my eye — I still review the selections — but it turns 10,000 images into a much more workable number in a fraction of the time it would take manually.

Step 3 – Capture One: The Real Creative Work

Once the selects were locked in, it was time for Capture One — the heart of my editing process.

This is where I bring the story to life:

• Fine-tuning colors so they feel true to the day.

• Perfecting skin tones for a natural, flattering look.

• Balancing light and shadow so every detail is clear but still feels atmospheric.

  

By the time I was done, the 10,000 images had been culled down to a 2,500-images in a final gallery, fully polished and delivered in just 48 hours.

Fun Fact: The Same-Day Instax & Canvas Surprise

The reception was buzzing — glasses clinking, music flowing, and the kind of laughter that fills a room and lingers in the air. I slipped over to Ayanna and Jerry with something in my hand.

First, I pulled out a small stack of Fujifilm Instax prints — fresh, warm-from-the-camera moments from earlier in the day. Ayanna’s eyes lit up as she held them, her fingers tracing over the edges. Jerry leaned in, smiling, as they flipped through the little snapshots, pointing out details, reliving moments that had already started to feel like a blur. Family and friends leaned closer, curious, drawn into the tiny windows of their day.

Then I told them I had one more thing.

From behind my chair, I lifted out a large canvas print — a portrait I had taken of them just hours before. The room seemed to pause for a second as they realized what it was. Jerry’s eyes went wide, and his jaw dropped slightly. Ayanna’s mouth opened into that big, joyful laugh that seemed to pull everyone around her into the moment.

The guests erupted — clapping, cheering, phones up, capturing their reaction. They stood there together, side by side, holding that canvas, not just seeing a photograph, but feeling their day crystallized into something tangible.

Jerry asked how I did it? And I just said “It’s magic!”

And that’s the part I’ll always remember — the way a single photograph can stop time for just long enough to make you feel the whole day all over again.

On April 5, 2025, I had the chance to photograph something special—Nativity Preparatory School’s Ignite the Night gala at The Waterfall in Wilmington, Delaware.

The room was full of energy from the moment guests arrived. Tables were set beautifully, glasses sparkled under the lights, and the smell of a great dinner filled the air. More than that, there was a real sense of purpose. Everyone was there to support the school and the students who are working hard to reach their dreams.

One of the most touching moments was seeing Fr. Richard DeLillio, OSFS, honored for his role in starting the school. His face lit up as people shared memories and thanks. Then, eighth-grader Raleir Tate took the stage and spoke from the heart about what Nativity Prep has meant to him. It was impossible not to be moved.

As a photographer, my favorite thing is catching the small moments—the laughs between friends, the proud smiles from family, the clink of glasses during a toast. Those moments tell the real story.

This wasn’t just a fundraiser. It was a reminder of how much can happen when a community comes together for something bigger than themselves. And I’m glad I got to be the one to capture it.

I got a message from Brooke—someone I’ve known since college. “Can you photograph my sister’s wedding?” she asked. I said yes without hesitation. I didn’t know much about the couple. I didn’t even know what kind of vibe the wedding would have. But I trust Brooke, and I felt honored to be asked.

That one yes led me to one of the most unexpectedly beautiful weddings I’ve photographed this year.

Lauren and Brian got married at the Marshallton Steakhouse in Wilmington, Delaware. It wasn’t one of those huge ballroom weddings. It didn’t need to be. Their love filled every space—every glance, every touch, every word spoken. It was intimate and full of life. People were celebrating something beautiful. Kids laughed. The older folks nodded in quiet approval. Everyone was fully present.

There was even a caricature artist sketching portraits on the spot, which gave the reception a warm, whimsical feel. One of my favorite photos from the day wasn’t a pose or a planned moment—it was a quick laugh shared between the bride and groom when they saw their cartoon selves.

And I kept thinking… this is why I love what I do. Not just for the grand moments, but for the small, real ones. The ones that slip by if you’re not paying attention. The ones that remind you that love, in its simplest form, is still the most powerful thing we have.

Some weddings are about more than the day itself. Heather and Josh’s Cancun wedding wasn’t just an event—it was a week filled with laughter, love, and unforgettable moments.

A Week in Paradise

Heather and Josh brought their family and friends to Cancun for a full week, and the energy was unforgettable. Mornings were for lounging by the pool and afternoons for volleyball matches that got a little competitive. Meals were shared at long tables, where the conversations and laughter made the food taste even better.

And then there was the night we took the celebration into town.

We headed to a club in Cancun to celebrate Heather and Josh. The streets were buzzing with music and lights, and inside, the energy was next-level. Heather and Josh were right in the center of it all, surrounded by the people who love them most. It wasn’t just a party—it was a memory that felt perfectly aligned with their love.

The Wedding Day

The morning of the wedding was calm and happy. Heather and her girls started the day in matching floral kimonos, sipping champagne and laughing as they got ready. But when Heather stepped into her wedding dress, everything shifted.

She looked stunning—completely radiant and ready. Her dress was timeless and elegant, fitting the beach setting perfectly.

The ceremony took place on the sand, with the ocean stretching out behind them. Rain had been in the forecast, but the skies cleared just in time. Heather walked down the aisle with grace, and Josh stood at the end waiting, smiling like he couldn’t believe his luck.

The simplicity of the ceremony was its magic—no distractions, just love, waves, and the people who mattered most.

A Celebration of Love

There’s this moment I see every time I take headshots.

Someone steps in front of my camera, nervous, unsure, already convinced they won’t like the final image. They tell me, “I don’t know how to pose,” or “I’m not photogenic.” And in that moment, I already know what’s about to happen.

Today, I went to Delaware State University to photograph something big—the inauguration of Delaware’s new governor, Matt Meyer. It was my first time at an event like this, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. The day turned out to be full of meaningful moments, and I was lucky to capture them.

The ceremony was held indoors because it was cold outside, but the energy in the room was warm and welcoming. Governor Meyer stood at the front, holding his baby son, Levi, in his arms. His wife, Lauren, held the Bible while he took the oath. Watching that, I realized how personal this moment was for him. It wasn’t just about becoming governor; it was about his family and the people he serves.

Lieutenant Governor Kyle Evans Gay was next. She stood proudly with her husband by her side as she took her oath. It felt like everyone in the room was cheering her on, even if they didn’t make a sound.

Then came the speeches. Governor Meyer talked about schools, teachers, and making sure everyone has a safe place to live. His words felt important, but they were easy to understand, like he wanted everyone—kids and adults—to know they matter.

There were a few interruptions during his speech from people speaking out about different issues, but Governor Meyer stayed calm and kept talking about what he plans to do. That showed me a lot about who he is.

At the end of the ceremony, Cape Henlopen High School student Adria Windish sang “Our Delaware.” Fun fact, I didn't know Delaware had a state song, so I learned something new. Adria’s voice filled the room, and for a moment, it felt like everyone was connected through the music.

As I packed up my camera, I thought about how much I’d seen and felt during the day. This wasn’t just a fancy event with speeches and ceremonies—it was about people, families, and hope for the future. And I got to capture it all through my lens.

Formal Foundations

We started simple—white shirt, black tie. The look was clean, sharp, and timeless. These portraits are the kind families treasure for generations. Even in these first shots, something deeper showed through: Ulysses wasn't just posing—he carried himself like a young man ready to embrace his future.

Strength in the Wrestling Room

Everything shifted when he donned his letterman jacket. In the wrestling room, we stepped into his element. Pride radiated through his stance, backed by years of dedication. For Ulysses, wrestling embodies discipline and growth—more than just victories. Standing there, he emanated readiness for life's next challenges.

Relaxed by the Truck

Outside the Lions Den, the truck shots revealed another side. Leaning against his Dodge with natural ease, Ulysses showed us his everyday self. These photos captured those quiet moments that reveal true personality—simple, authentic, perfect.

The Musician's Side

The guitar brought out something special. Under the shade, Ulysses played—just genuine connection with his music. These shots unveiled his gentler side, beautifully balancing the strength we'd captured earlier.

A Glimpse of What's Ahead

This session captured more than senior portraits—it revealed Ulysses becoming his own man. From the intensity of the wrestling mat to the serenity of the guitar bench, each moment showed a different facet of his character. This wasn't just about marking the end of high school—it was about capturing a young man confidently stepping toward his future.

Erin walked down the aisle, her lace gown flowing with the breeze. There was a collective wow when she appeared. She moved with grace and confidence, her eyes locked on Dyllan. The look on his face said it all—pure love and admiration. It was a moment that could make anyone believe in fairytales.

Their vows were deeply personal. Erin spoke of the first time she knew she loved Dyllan. Dyllan promised to always support her dreams and to be her rock. When they exchanged rings, the sun seemed to shine just a bit brighter, casting a golden glow over them.

After the ceremony, it was time for group photos. The grand steps of Belmont Hall made for a stunning backdrop. Family and friends were lively, filled with laughter and joy. Family photos captured the pride and happiness of their loved ones. You could feel the love and support in every frame.

Then it was just Dyllan and Erin. We wandered through the gardens, capturing their love under an ancient oak tree. The way they looked at each other, the way they laughed at shared jokes, it was clear these two were meant to be. Outside, on the backyard staircase, Erin’s gown cascaded down like a waterfall of lace. Dyllan stood beside her, his arm around her waist, both of them lost in their own world.

One photo stood out. I asked Dyllan and Erin if they can do a lean back photo where Erin kicks her leg out. Without hesitation did the pose and with three frames later we got the shot.

As the day came to a close, I looked through my camera, reviewing the moments I had captured. Dyllan and Erin’s wedding was not just a celebration; it was a testament to their journey, their love, and the support of everyone who surrounded them. It was a perfect day, and I felt grateful to have been a part of it.

Melanie and I had the honor of covering the Fresh Start Scholarship Foundation’s “Education is Always in Style” event, and what a night it was. Held at the elegant DuPont Country Club, this evening was more than a celebration of fashion—it was a showcase of resilience, transformation, and the power of new beginnings for so many inspiring women.

Setting the Stage

We arrived early to capture the calm before the excitement. The ballroom, meticulously arranged with a runway and chic décor, awaited its guests. Registration tables were lined with smiling volunteers, ready to welcome the attendees. This peaceful prelude gave us time to photograph the setup and feel the energy slowly building.

Once the models arrived, the atmosphere shifted. Melanie and I split up to capture the flurry of behind-the-scenes moments. From final touches in makeup to bursts of laughter and last-minute pep talks from mentors, every candid shot seemed to tell its own story.

Fashion Meets Confidence

As the fashion show began, it was clear this was no ordinary runway. Each model—wearing pieces from boutiques like Chico’s, Lane Bryant, and JMcLaughlin—walked with a unique confidence that radiated beyond the clothes. Through our lenses, we aimed to highlight not just the styles on display, but the strength and personal growth behind every step.

The evening was elevated even further with a performance by Olivia Rubini, whose soulful voice brought the crowd to its feet. The collective energy in the room was palpable, as if every attendee was part of a shared journey.

A Night to Remember

The event wrapped up with the raffle drawings by Mary and heartfelt thank-yous from Lisa-Marie, the perfect notes to end a night full of purpose. Looking around, Melanie and I saw faces lit up with joy, connection, and hope. It was a moment that reminded us why we do what we do—capturing not just images, but the essence of stories that matter.

Being part of this event was an absolute privilege. Every photo we took felt like a piece of the larger story, one of fresh starts and new possibilities. Thank you to the Fresh Start Scholarship Foundation for allowing us to document such an inspiring evening.

15 years ago, I had this wild idea. I wanted to recreate a classic hatbox shot inspired by Cecil Beaton, an artist who knew how to make magic with the simplest props. My friend Rachel agreed to be the face in the box.

I went out and bought a vintage hatbox from Ross, and getting it ready was a struggle. Cutting out the bottom with an X-Acto knife was no small task. I remember wedging the whole setup on a rocking chair and footrest, just to keep that box in place. A white curtain draped in the background completed the look.

Rachel had to fold herself just right to fit inside, leaning at an angle that couldn’t have been comfortable. But when she looked up, her eyes caught the light with a softness that was timeless. She pulled it off beautifully, and for a moment, I felt like we’d stepped right back into Beaton’s world.

This shot—one of those rare, unplanned moments where the frame just speaks—has always stayed with me. I still remember that day in Philly with my class from Wilmington University, long before I was thinking about cloud backups or high-res storage. We were out photographing the city, wandering its streets with our cameras in hand, just waiting for something real to unfold in front of us.

And then, there he was: this man in a tux, playing his flute as if he was performing for an audience only he could see. He wasn’t looking for attention, just lost in his own world, with a joy so palpable that it practically radiated off of him. You could feel it. He looked like he’d made peace with life’s ups and downs, and now all he wanted was to share a bit of that with anyone willing to stop and listen.

Attending Imaging USA in Nashville was an unforgettable experience, packed with unexpected surprises and new opportunities. One moment that stands out happened at the Gaylord Hotel when I was casually standing in line at a burger place, holding my Fuji X-Pro 2. A Fuji rep spotted the camera and asked if I was a fan of Fuji. That opened the door to a conversation where I told her how I had recently made the jump from Canon to Fuji, and I haven’t looked back since.

To my surprise, she told me about a secret Fujifilm photo walk happening that very day, and there was an opportunity to compete for a Fujifilm X-H2S camera. All I had to do was meet at the Christmas tree. I didn’t need any more convincing—I was instantly hyped. I quickly raced over to the meeting spot, filled with excitement for what was about to happen.

When I arrived, there were six other photographers who were equally eager to join in. We were all given the chance to photograph an incredible model named Kennedy Mullins. She was an absolute gem to work with, bringing a natural elegance and professionalism that made the entire shoot flow seamlessly. Kennedy moved gracefully through the session, and capturing her energy and poise was a dream. The Fujifilm reps were just as fantastic, guiding us through the experience and offering tips to get the most out of the gear.

This entire experience just cemented my love for Fuji even more. It was an exciting reminder of the unexpected opportunities that can happen when you’re surrounded by creative professionals and cutting-edge technology. The session was amazing, and it gave me a deeper appreciation for the community and innovation Fuji brings to the photography world.

Imaging USA delivered so many great moments, but this surprise photo walk was one of the highlights. It’s these kinds of spontaneous, fun moments that make me proud to be part of this industry.
